... Long time no see!

This is after a long time... I dont get a lot of free time in my course nowadays, and even if I do get, i am in no mood for sketching... I usually watch or rewatch a movie with my room-mate.. or watch a few tickly episodes of The BBT.

All that just to say that I dont sketch much in college. And this is the first decent sketch I have made since coming to this college. I'd rather not show you the other one I had made!  And here is the sketch...

I used the usual pencils... and charcoal and a black pen to do the hair...

Comment on how u think it is! It'll be a great help

Dug up...

As I was saying, I had dug up my older files. Here are some sketches I made after shifting to Guwahati in 2009...
(and with shading pencils, these..!)

The beginning

A new post after many days... maybe too long..
Well, now my semester's over and I am at home. I didnt draw much during the last part of the semster. So, I didnt have much to show for.

Well, after coming home in all the leisure time I have been having, I dug up my old files and found my oldest drawing! It was done in 2001/2002; but it may very well have been before 2000, that is in the last millenium.

Here it is... a balloon seller in a country fair and some kids...

Pen Sketching...

I tried out pen sketching after a long time...

Drawing with pen sometimes feels very relieving because when you are really frustrated about not doing very good work for a span of a few days... doing a crude pen sketch at least gives you the relief of a single complete work... It sure works that way for me...not that I am an artist or something...

These sketches have been done on very bad quality paper ... very bad indeed.

And another thing that I have noticed over the span of posting photos on this blog is that since I have clicked all the photos of my sketches of my camera using a 5MP mobile camera in poor lighting of the room , the photos dont come quite same as the original sketches, and tampering with the saturation settings of the photo only make it worse . And since all my drawings are pencil or pen sketches, that plays a crucial factor .

I am thinking of retaking all the photos again using a somewhat better camera with a little better lighting (still, because I dont have professional photography equipments).

Attempt at Realistic Finger...

I tried a little bit of hyper-realism with this sketch. Its my own finger and I have tried to make it look like a photo. Did only two fingers Didn't have much space for more...
The finger in the first photo looks best because I hadn't shaded with the charcoal yet and when I did the contrast with the charcoal made the finger look really dull...

This is the actual drawing.. I just brought the sketch within margin and now it looks dull...

Well, you can always think of it as an old photo, but then it kills the whole notion of hyper-realism.
I guess next time I'll just have to try harder.

In this one, I used 2H, HB, 2B, 3B and charcoal..
I'm building my pencil stack over time, because I now have realized the value of using suitable pencils.

Jajabor

This portrait of Bhupen Hazarika was actually made on the day of his funeral in 2011. Maa and Baba had gone to his funeral procession and I was at home making this. My tinniest tribute to the Jajabor...

The Anne Frank Story (contd.)

Well, I had mentioned about my obsession with Anne Frank. When I was reading her diary I got to know about this mini series called Anne Frank:The Whole Story starring Ben Kingsley and Hannah Taylor Gordon , released in 2001. I watched it and although I couldn't complete it ,I was so influenced by the acting ( as it is I was already influenced by the story), I decided to draw portraits of the two leads.

Here's portraits of Ben Kingsley And Hannah Taylor Gordon...

Ben Kingsley

Yeah, there are spots on the portrait as I said once my copy had gotten wet.
Both the sketches were done with just HB pencils , because, as I had said, I was obsessed with HB!
So , maybe they didn't come out as good as they could have been...

The Anne Frank story...

Probably, all of you have heard about Anne Frank. The little girl in Nazi Germany trapped in a hideout with her family, during the Second World War, who maintained a diary during her captivity. Later in 1945 she and family were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Sadly, she didnt make it through the war.

But her diary was found and published and it has gained worldwide appreciation and fame since. So last to last winter ,when I took up her diary to read, I was so greatly affected by her story and the way she expressed her feelings as she grew up in hideout, that I decided to dedicate two portraits to her...

Even these are old sketches, done around a year ago... to be precise, last January...

Well, once my copy got drenched wet during travel and colour from something else seeped into the pages. So, there are these pink marks all over the first sketch...

Both these sketches were made with HB pencils on chart paper material.

Long live Anne Frank's memory...

You can visit her page to get to know more about her at   http://www.annefrank.org/ ...

Dista Sketch...

This one below was done a long time back in August. I had just shifted to my new hostel and had nothing very interesting to do, so I dug up my my wallpaper list , found this nice picture and made a sketch. The result is below...

I didnt have proper paper at the time and this drawing was done on very bad quality paper. That is why the sketch has so many shiny parts here and there. This drawing again was made with an HB pencil...

I like the melancholy expression on her face...

Emma

There's a long story behind this post, this portrait actually. This is one my earliest portraits. I started drawing this in 2010, when I was in class 10. Somehow , I couldnt complete shading this then and the sketch had been lying for quite sometime now. Previously, I had thought of completing this many times but then something or the other always came in the way.

Yesterday night I had nothing else to do. So I thought why not get this done. I started and this is the mid result...

Well, there are a few things that I learnt . Firstly, a sketch kept for so long takes considerable time to be rubbed off. And secondly, 6B pencils are a boon (because I didnt have one to do the darker areas, and had to make do with 3B) !

This portrait was made on normal chart paper material, with HB pencil for the sketching part ( yes I remember ) and 3B used for the shading.

No imagination...

I have always drawn from inspirations. All my sketches are either direct reproductions from actual photos or inspirations from photos. So , today, I tried my own imaginations for starters. Conclusion is I in future will strictly adhere to drawing from photos! Here is the sketch...

#Portrait

Classes and assignments had kept me occupied all throughout the week. So, yesterday when I got an entire afternoon off, I thought why not get a sketch done... I had always wanted to make this sketch. It always makes me happy to look at happy people. And I hope it does others too...

Not someone I know, but someone I found while browsing through the net...
Here's the sketch done by me above followed by the original picture I found on the net...

Funny it should be so...

Well, when I was younger and made portraits and till quite recently too, I used HB pencils for the entire process, right from the sketching till the shading. The results wouldnt bother me and I would smirk thinking  that using softer leaded pencils like 2B, 3B, etc... was more extravaganza than useful. Well, recently, I tried a portrait with a 3B pencil and the result was much better. Erasing is easier because of the softer tones and even smudging is made easy by using softer pencils. Also, recent use of charcoal, showed how effective they were...

The photos that I post of my drawings on this blog are clicked using very bad camera and hence the final photo is many shades darker than the original sketch. Other than changing the image saturation, I dont see how I can make the photo look more like the original sketch. Any suggestions?

A new beginning...

And I started the new year with this portrait...
Even though the final result didnt come out to be who it should have been, but its fair enough as it is , I suppose!

I have used normal paper for the sketch . For all the sketching and shading I used an HB pencil. However for doing the darker parts of the hair , I used a soft charcoal pencil .

#Portrait

Here's what I made yesterday...

The idea's from a wallpaper I found online... Initially , I hadnt noticed that the girl had freckles , so I had left the sketch as it was, but adding the freckles added a layer of depth to the sketch and only made it better.

I used an HB pencil for my all my sketching and most of my shading , and used a soft graphite one for doing parts of the hair. From the few experiences I have had with graphite pencils,I have discovered that using it to do hair or textures of cloth brings in a contrast to the sketch.

A First Post

Well, I had given up on drawing a long time back... It is only recently that I have started drawing again and the results havent been too bad... So here's a new blog with the results...

Note:
The portraits and other drawings posted in this blog, unless otherwise stated, have been drawn by me and I am the sole owner of these drawings.
